-Tour of studio
-Expectations from the class
-Learn design and basic terms
-Paint and color theory
-Review of materials and mediums
-Rules
Materials needed (A must for the class!)
Three shades and or hues of each primary color (Hues can be used instead of pure pigment paints, the cost is less to buy hues.)
Red: Cadmium light or Naphthol red
Cadmium medium or Cadmium deep
Alizarin crimson
Yellow: Cadmium Light or a comparable light yellow
Cadmium medium
Yellow Ochre or Yellow Oxide or a dark yellow
Blue: Cerulean
Cobalt or a comparable blue
Ultramarine or Prussian or a dark blue
White: You will use a lot, so a large tube or jar is a plus!
You may bring other colors along with the required ones if you like? SORRY NO BLACK!!!
Brands of paint to consider
Acrylic: Liquitex, Golden, Winsor and Newton, Utrect, and Pebeo
Oil: Utrect, Grumbacher, Winsor and Newton, Pebeo, Gamblin, and Rembrandt.
Other materials needed
-A palette (stay wet) for acrylics works well, and a basic plastic or wood one works well for both acrylic and oils. (I found that a white or clear Tupperware container with a lid works well, so you can keep the paint wet between sessions.)
-Oil painters need to bring a jar with a lid and odorless thinner! (safer for everyone)
-Acrylic painters need a spray bottle or a stay wet palette, and a jar for water.
Brushes: 4 different sizes and types are required.
-Two different sizes of each type of brush is a good variety to have on hand (You may bring others in addition if you like.)
-Sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 in the different types: Flat, Filbert, Bright and round.
Canvas, board, or panel to paint on
-Please bring 2 of your choice. The sizes that work best for a class are: 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 and any size in between. You can buy them pre-primed with gesso or a good house primer works well.
Make sure the material is primed and dry before you come to class.
Additional materials needed
-Photos, pictures, or references to work from.
-A good sharp pencil or graphite to sketch with.
-A roll of paper towel or some rags for wiping and cleaning excess paint and brushes.
-A bag, bin or tackle box, to carry your supplies to and from class in.
-An apron or clothes you don’t mind getting messy.
Easels I will supply the easels for standing up to, but you may bring your own if you like.
Feel free to split the cost of materials with someone. You don’t need to spend a lot when learning. It takes time to get a feel for what works for you and what doesn’t.
You will find many of these supplies at Bev’s imports (Ogden), Michaels (Riverdale), Ogden Blue (Ogden), Utrect (SLC) and Reuels (SLC). And feel free to ask about any of these.
*The last hour of the last class we will have a group critique of the paintings finished or not.
This will be a great time and learning experience for all!
