Utah wire artist, teacher & author, Carolyn Eddy of Honeyville Utah has achieved both national & international recognition for her wire expertise, original jewelry designs and for exceptional teaching skills that includes her innovative, relaxed [no stress] method of teaching the art of designing and creating jewelry with wire. A self-taught wire artist, Carolyn started her 7th year demonstrating & teaching for Gem Faire Inc. of Portland, Oregon in Oct of 2007. She travels North America demonstrating and teaching prearranged private, semiprivate and group classes, as well as full day workshops in the various wire art skills, [wire wrapping, jewelry design, wire art sculpture and spool-knitting.] “Wire Wrapping” or wire art sculpture is one of the oldest forms of jewelry making known, dating 2 to 3 thousand years B.C., and uses Gold, Silver or Copper wire to create jewelry. “Spool-Knitting another ancient wire craft, uses Gold, Silver, Copper or Craft wire to create various designs and sizes of chains.” Over the last 15 years while mastering the mechanics of these arts, Carolyn has developed her revolutionary, “Step by Step, No Stress, Method of Designing Jewelry with Wire.” Her techniques employ the age-old methods updated for use with the modern tools and supplies. This unique method teaches beginning students to design original pieces rather than simply copying a pattern, her passion for wire art as well as years of experience teaching and judging fine art, creates an effective, and innovative classroom environment for beginners as well as the experienced wire artist. Carolyn has won numerous fine art awards locally, nationally and internationally, showing her work in various art shows, fairs and collections all across North America, pieces of her artwork and jewelry are in collections world wide. Her books include “Let’s Get Wrapped!” just released in January of 2007 and two more books to be released in 2008 “Spool-Knitting Inside & Out!” and “All Wrapped Up!” an advanced wire design book.
Carolyn’s home is in the small northern Utah town of Honeyville. Like many artists, Carolyn has been involved with creating art since childhood. She sold her first piece of art at the age of 10. At 13 one of her watercolors was selected for an international tour.
During the years that Carolyn and her husband Tom raised a family, she studied art and art anatomy at Weber State and Utah State University, worked as an interior decorator, a floral designer, and designed and successfully manufactured her own line of wedding veils. Over the years, two of the many noted professionals that she studied and painted with were Oliver Parsons & LeConte Stewart. She has won numerous awards for her works in oil, watercolor, pastel, sculpture & wire art sculpture [wire wrapped jewelry.] She has shared her gift with many and several of her former students have become sterling scholars in art. She has been a 4H Fine Art Director, and spent several years as Box Elder County Fair’s Fine Art Director, and a Fine Art Fair Judge. Her work has been shown in numerous art shows, fairs, as well as one-man, two person and group shows.
In 1995 Carolyn was commissioned to do a sculpture titled "Horse Power," used by the National Cutter Racing Association as a trophy for their Western Regional Cutter Racing Finals. In 1995 she was commissioned to do a series of Santa sculptures titled "Santa the Winter Sportsman," released in conjunction with the 2002 winter Olympics. In both 1997 & 1998 she entered an international religious sculpture contest where each entrant was given the same religious theme and 1 lb. of sculpting wax to finish a sculpture. The Monterey Sculpture Center cast and mounted the winning pieces, [in ‘97 Carolyn was one of 8, & in ‘98 she was one of 10 finalists world wide to have their sculptures cast in Bronze.]
In 2002, two of her sculptures were again accepted in the "Sister Kenny Art Show & Sale in Minneapolis, Minn., where she won an Incentive Merit Award. Her work was also included in the very first "Traces Of The West Invitational Art Show." In 2001, Carolyn participated in the prestigious "52nd Death Valley 49'ers Invitational Western Art Show & Sale. " She was invited to return the following year for the 53rd year of this exclusive show and was also notified by the 49'er Association that a drawing she submitted was included in a western themed coloring book, featuring the Death Valley 49'er Artists to be sold in Death Valley National Park. Carolyn also sculpts limited edition cameos.
Carolyn Eddy Wire Design Classes
Classes include all beads, materials and a handout. All tools needed are furnished for classroom use without charge.
Three individual classes or a discount will be provided when all three classes are taken as a series.
Carolyn is a design based teacher, not [project based, where everyone does the exact same project.] The purpose of Carolyn’s chosen method of teaching is to provide students with proper mechanics and design elements, stressing that students learn to think creatively and use their own likes and dislikes to design their own individual pieces. Classes are designed to teach each student how to use the tools and to become familiar with the wire without the fear of failure, thus giving them the confidence to continue creating pieces without assistance. [The finished pieces of jewelry are simply an added bonus to this extraordinary creative experience.]
These classes will be taught using base metals if Sterling wire is desired, arrangements may be discussed with the teacher.
#1: Hoop Earring Components
Students will learn how to create French hooks and an assortment of hoop components necessary in the designing of original [or designer] hoop earrings. [A variety of bead choices and colors are available.] Class is designed to teach basic wire and tool handling skills & techniques to be used to create designer earrings.] A good foundation class for beginners, with all materials and handouts included in the price of the class.
#2: Chandelier Earring Components
Students will learn how to make French hooks and numerous components necessary in designing original chandelier earrings [A variety of colors and bead choices available.] This class is designed to teach basic wire and tool handling skills & techniques that can be used to create designer earrings.] A good foundation class for beginners, with all materials and handouts included in the price of this class.
#3: Unique Bead Pendant
Students will design beautiful pendants using beads. [A variety of color and bead choices are available.] This class teaches basic wire and tool handling skills & techniques that can be used to create both designer pendants or exquisite original pairs of earrings, including the French hooks.] A good foundation class for beginners, with all materials and hand outs Included in the class price.
