HeArt Center is designed to be a reference for teachers of Elementary schools grades 3-6. Home schools will also find useful lessons and tips in HeArt Center.  We will add new lessons every quarter.

Lessons will satisfy as many Utah State core standards for visual arts as we can accommodate for your grade, while providing a fun and interesting art project.

Lead a discussion with your students explaining how/why artists name their pieces.  Words from the Heart by Vanessa Munoz is a good example for the students to view.

Instruct your students to either pick a common phrase from the following list, or assign them a phrase to inspire the students to create a piece of artwork. They may also use it to name their piece.  Explain to your students that there are so many different things that inspire an artist’s artwork.  Certain phrases or words can be one thing that may inspire certain works. Discuss with them what else could inspire an artist:  memories, people, places, interests, emotions, events……

When the students have completed the project, have them share their artwork with the class and explain why they chose the colors that they used, and how they incorporated the suggested title into the piece, and what other inspirations they had to arrive to the final piece of artwork.

Third Grade Core Standards

Standard 1, Objective 1,C.  Paint with Complimentary color schemes

Have the students look at a color wheel and design their artwork using a complimentary color scheme http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complementary_colorscheme.

Standard 1, Objective 1, d. Make one color dominate in a painting. Paired with the above standard, ask them to make their heart one color that will dominate the piece.

Standard 2, Objective 2, d. Create a work of art that uses all of the space on the paper.

Make sure the students understand that they are to use the whole paper to make their work of art. Since the complimentary color scheme is being used, the next standard is also being satisfied.

Standard 2, Objective 2, e. Create a work of art that uses contrast to create a focal point. Use complimentary colors to make the focal point the most important idea or part of the work.

4th Grade Core Standards

Use this art project to fulfill:

Standard 1, Objective 2, b. Dispose and/or recycle art materials in a safe and appropriate manner. Standard 1, Objective 2, c. Clean and store art materials and equipment in a way that extends their life and usability.

Standard 1, Objective 2, d. Clean and put back to order art making areas after projects.

Standard 1, Objective 2, e. Respect others students artworks as well as one’s own.

The above discussion of this project satisfies:

Standard 3, Objective 1 a. Determine and explore a variety of sources of inspiration for making art.

Fifth Grade Core Standards

If possible, use the heart examples above to help the students distinguish realistic (Munoz), geometric  (Britto), abstract (Gockel), pop art (Peter Max)and organic (Avent-DiLorenzo)  This will satisfy Standard 2, Objective 1,d. Classify works of art as realistic, abstract, geometric, or organic.

Assign or allow the students to choose their inspiration phrase from the list above. Have them decide how they will convey this idea and write down several ideas. Each student will do rough copies of each idea and then choose the one they like best to make their final piece.

*Having the student plan out their ideas will satisfy Standard 1, objective 2,a. Preplan the steps or tasks to achieve a desired image. Preliminary sketches will help them to satisfy Standard 1, Objective 2,c. Use preparatory sketches to solve visual problems before beginning an actual work of art.

Have the students use a personal experience to create their heart art and satisfy Standard 3, Objective 2,b. Use a personal experience as inspiration to create a work of art.

Have the students incorporate an idea to represent pride or love of one’s family into their heart  piece to satisfy Standard 3, Objecive 2,d. Convey an idea, such as pride or love of one’s family, through a work of art.

To satisfy Standard 4, Objective 2,b. Create a work of Art that reflects a positive part of past or present American Culture, have your students use their heart art to portray their sense of pride in their country or a certain event in American history that is important to their heart.

To satisfy Standard 2, Objective 2,a. Use contour lines and Objective 2,b. create a work of art with symmetry, Have your students fold their paper in half.  The students would draw one side of the heart along the fold then create the outer design. They would then create an exact reproduction on the other side of the fold to create a symmetrical piece. Another paint can be used on one side of the fold and while wet, folded to ‘print’ on the other side to create the symmetry. Outline the heart and add designs as wanted.

6th grade Core Standards

Assign or allow the students to choose their inspiration phrase from the list above.  Have them decide how they will convey this idea and write down several ideas. Have the students do rough copies of each idea and then choose the one they like best to make their final piece.  This activity will satisfy Standard 1, objective 2, a. Consider a variety of ideas before starting a work of art and Standard 1, Objective 2, b. Make thumbnail sketches, storyboards or verbal descriptions to help organize art ideas before beginning the actual piece.

After the students have completed their piece, have them share their artwork to the class and explain  why they chose the colors that they used, and how they incorporated the suggested title into the piece.

This exercise will help students understand the thought process of others. Lead a discussion on our opinions of art, that art is never “good or bad” that everything depends on your point of viewStandard 1, objective 2,d. Respect other students artwork as well as one’s own.

Choose a couple of the students work to represent line, shape, color, value and/or texture and review these with the class, Standard 2, objective 1,e.

This activity also satisfies Standard 2, Objective 1, a. Select themes or symbols appropriate for describing an idea or personal experience in art.
